Legalization of Marijuana Effort Loses Big in Tuesday's Election, Ohioans Win

On Tuesday, Ohioans turned back an effort to legalize marijuana in the State of Ohio, demonstrating once again the traditional values deeply held by the residents of this state. Even as the marijuana promoters backing Issue 3 were spending millions in TV and print publications to push for the legalization of marijuana, Ohioans considered carefully the warnings coming from the State of Colorado with reports of higher rates of homelessness, increase in high school drop-out rates, a 32 percent jump in traffic fatalities related to marijuana use, big increases in emergency room visits and hospitalizations, greater pot usage among youth age 12 to 17, and an increase in violent crimes by those high on marijuana. A stern warning was issued from the Governor of Colorado who stated that legalization of marijuana was a bad idea, and he urged other states to not follow suit. Ohioans also saw polls indicating that Coloradoans would now repeal the legalization effort by a whopping 65%.

The Ohio Christian Alliance wants to thank its network of volunteers who distributed the voter guide, getting the word out on Issue 3. OCA would also like to commend State Attorney General Mike DeWine, State Auditor Dave Yost, State Treasurer Josh Mandel, Secretary of State Jon Husted, and the coalition of groups including clergy, police, educators, nurses, doctors, and concerned citizens who lent their support to defeat Issue 3. There is much work to be done in this state concerning drug addiction and the heroin epidemic. OCA looks forward to working with legislators, local officials and community leaders to address drug addiction in our state, finding workable solutions for our children's future.
